To get hearts and not just eyeballs is the valuable thing. What good is it if a million people watch your YouTube video only to forget about your video are and what you do by the time they go to sleep that night?
The name of the game is creating a connection by seizing the attention of the viewer and impressing upon the viewer skillfulness or commonality that causes them to “connect” with you.
This is difficult. Think about the street musician. She’s a prodigy. She’s obsessed. She practices 6 hours a day. She spends a thousand hours practicing and she entertains a group of 30 people for two and a half minutes with her extraordinary skill on the piano.
She spent hours to get two minutes of attention. There isn’t even a guarantee that she’ll get any connection out of it.
However, that 1000 hours of practice leads to such an extraordinary two and a half minutes, she’s sure to leave a lasting mark on some who pass by and watch her.
The price of attention is high and the guarantee of lasting connection is nonexistent. What would happen with your business if you started investing more time into high-quality ventures that connected (or attempted to connect) you with your users/viewers/clients?
It’s a high price/high reward gamble, but it’s always worth it.
