Probably all but the very best of us have the occasional bit of procrastination.
We're used to being told what to do. We are given a task and a deadline, and we would go to work. Get to school on time, get to football practice on time, get to music lessons on time, and have your instructor hand you work.
But then something changes. You get your homework, and things get more complicated (instructor isn't there to oversee you). When you get to college, forget it, everything seems different. Why?
As we grow older, we become more independent and, therefore, the punishments for failing to meet deadlines are less painful, and, where it is still painful, it's easier to retreat into a depressive state and binge Netflix or YouTube instead.
As we grow older, we also have fewer people watching over us and monitoring what we're doing.
So how do you beat procrastination? Three steps:
Be honest with yourself. Make sure you genuinely want to beat it.
Set deadlines yourself and find a way to have real consequences that you can't run from (scary!)
Work with somebody else. Even if it's somebody just sitting in the room with you (or something like FocusMate), you will get more done.
Scary deadlines, and someone is monitoring you. Bring back those two essential elements that keep you on track.
